College of Family and Consumer Sciences: December 2008

Financial Advisor at Preston & Cleveland Wealth Management, LL

The University of Georgia and the College for Family and Consumer Sciences played an integral role in my career success. Not only did I feel more prepared and more qualified than other potential job candidates entering the workforce, but my involvement with the Family Financial Planning Program and Student Financial Planning Association was the actual conduit that connected me with my current employer.

Through my program’s industry outreach, I was able to connect, communicate, and even interview with a number of industry professionals while still a student. This interaction allowed me to secure an internship that eventually became a career as a financial advisor. Now I work with a rapidly growing, independent fee-only wealth management firm. In addition to this, I am the co-host and producer of the top 25 iTunes business podcast, The Money-Guy Show. This free personal finance broadcast reaches over 10,000 listeners every two weeks and is ranked alongside household names such as Dave Ramsey, Suze Orman, and Jim Cramer. As a side benefit of this media exposure, we now have client relationships all over the country and listeners all over the world.

It was my desire and drive to ‘get involved’ that allowed me to discover these unique opportunities. Without the University’s willingness to prepare students for the workforce and commitment to connect them with industry professionals, I do not think I would have had the opportunities for success that I feel so fortunate to have come across.
