Benefits of Job Shadowing

Let’s talk about job shadowing - what is it? Why is it important?

Job shadowing is the opportunity to observe a working professional as they move through their day on the job. It’s a great chance to see how a specific industry operates and what it means to be working full-time, especially if you’re considering changing your major or would like more context into a role’s expectations in that field. Job shadowing also gives you the chance to apply your classroom learning to industry trends and to see the concepts you’ve been learning about in real time.

For some professional journeys that require additional schooling like clinical healthcare, education or engineering,  job shadowing is a requirement..

You're probably thinking, "How do I find job shadowing opportunities?" The good news is, the Career Center has you covered through the UGA Intern For A Day program. This program is a part of our initiative to connect our students with real-world industry experience. This is a one-day experience that can take place in-person or virtually for either a full day or half-day.

Intern For A Day is hosted in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Our program structure empowers you with the flexibility to schedule your job shadow day at a time that works best for your schedule.

To get started, create your student profile on our online platform. Once that’s set up you can begin searching for employers’ job shadowing opportunities. You will be able to filter your search on a variety of criteria, including what majors they’re looking for, if the opportunities are in-person or virtual, and more. You will apply to the postings directly by uploading your resume and submitting a short statement of interest. As you apply to various postings, you will rank each application based on your interest and which employer you wish to be matched with.

Participating in our program is a great way to network with employers, alumni, faculty, or staff and start building professional connections. You never know where life might take you and who along your journey can support you in your next career move.
