E.J. Gallo: A Career Conversation with David Black

What motivated you to join E.J. Gallo Winery?
It’s a fun industry with great people!

How does E.J. Gallo Winery convey to employees a sense of belonging?
We have a mentor/mentee program in place throughout your career.

In what ways has E.J. Gallo Winery supported your professional development and growth?
They have encouraged continued learning throughout my career. I am now a certified specialist in wine and spirits.

In what ways are you supported in maintaining a healthy work-life balance?
As a family run company, Gallo’s mission is family first. You are encouraged to take your PTO when you need to. Staying healthy in your personal life carries over into your work life.

How do you know that you’re making a difference/having an impact with the work that you do?
Direct results. Especially starting in a sales career the numbers do the talking. As your career progresses you continue to leave your mark and make a difference.

What makes you proud to represent E.J. Gallo Winery?
This company has provided me a great opportunity that I will always be grateful for. The people are the best part of this company and they have my back.

In what ways do you feel like you’ve grown since working for E.J. Gallo Winery?
I am a much more confident now than I have ever been. You are constantly challenged to get out of your comfort zone in our SLDP program.

What do you wish you had known about the professional world when you were a student?
Relocating to a new city for a job can be scary because you are starting over. But that was the best decision I ever made because you learn so much from that experience.

In thinking about emerging young professionals, what advice would you share to those seeking their first opportunities?
Provide value. Don’t treat the job like a clock in and clock out. Take pride in your work and challenge yourself to be the best. Show up to WIN.
