Jackson & Coker: A Career Conversation with Laura Buffa

What motivated you to join Jackson+Coker?
What motivated me to join Jackson + Coker was the mission and values that the people embody, which ultimately feeds into the culture here. Upon first discovering the company and then continuing throughout the interview process, it became evident that Others First, Growth, and Wisdom is in everything we do here, and I wanted to be part of a company whose values aligned with mine.

How does Jackson+Coker convey to employees a sense of belonging?
#OneTeamOneVision...Every part of the process matters, and everyone here matters in order for this to work, for us to continue to grow, and for us to successfully serve our customers with excellence. The leadership team does a great job of emphasizing this motto in hopes that every individual here feels that they and what they do matter.

In what ways has Jackson+Coker supported your professional development and growth?
There is a lot of investment in training as well as professional development that happens here. Jackson + Coker truly puts the thought into setting their employees up for success through initial training, but it doesn’t stop there. There is a development community associates can be a part of that fosters growth and continued learning through different classes and resources of your choosing. Something that I have worked on with my leader is an IDP which is an individualized plan to help you achieve the goals that you want to achieve in your career. Something I have been a part of on campus is our Toastmasters chapter, which is a club to help you build and further your public speaking and leadership skills. These are just a few of the many resources you can take part in.

In what ways are you supported in maintaining a healthy work-life balance?
We have such an amazing campus including an on-site fitness center, game room for a mid day break, and even a Starbucks and dining hall if you want to grab some lunch with coworkers or invite friends and family to have a meal with you. There is always a job to be done but at the end of the day we have access to an amazing facility and resources that foster wellness and balance to take care of your health (physical and mental).

How do you know that you’re making a difference/having an impact with the work that you do?
The work we do here serves communities across the country and has an impact on countless lives. As a physician staffing company, Jackson + Coker works every day to connect providers and communities to transform lives so that more people across the country have access to healthcare. One way we are able to see that direct impact is a report that goes out every month showing the total number of patients that have been helped thus far through the work that we do here every day. Word of mouth is another way as we continue to hear stories from providers and the patients' lives they were able to save through the opportunity we connected them to.

What makes you proud to represent Jackson+Coker?
The way that we live out our values not only in our day to day but with our customers as well. I am proud to be part of a company that has such a great impact on communities across the country and the work that we do here truly makes a difference in others' lives.

In what ways do you feel like you’ve grown since working for Jackson+Coker?
I feel that personally and professionally, I have grown more confident in my role. I have my leader to thank for all her guidance and support throughout my time here to help me continue to grow and master the skills it takes to be successful in my role. The great thing about J+C is that they really do care about your professional development and are there to support you along the way as you navigate your career within the company.

What do you wish you had known about the professional world when you were a student?
It’s important to lay out your goals and pinpoint what it truly is that drives you to show up every day and what your next steps are to achieve being the person you want to be. Take that mindset into work every day and you will flourish.

In thinking about emerging young professionals, what advice would you share to those seeking their first opportunities?
In this new stage of life, be open to trying new things as you won’t know until you try. Be confident in what you have to offer. Find a place you can truly call home as work is where we spend a huge part of our lives. I feel I have truly found home at Jackson + Coker and in my year here thus far, I have built such great connections at this company and met some of my closest friends here.
