Standing Out: Best Practices to Showcase Your Portfolio

Your portfolio isn’t just a collection of work; it’s a conversation starter, confidence booster, and career launcher. With projects and experience becoming all the more important, your portfolio is the perfect way to stand out and show skills in ways that a resume cannot. Not only can your portfolio give employers a clear picture of creative thinking and problem solving, but it can show growth and experience through tangible results.

Standing Out in Interviews

  • Your portfolio is evidence of your value. Connect projects and past experiences to questions you are asked in the interview to show your creative thinking and experience!
  • Use the STAR Method to answer questions showcasing the Situation, Task, Action, and Result of your experiences.
  • Prepare one “spotlight” project you can reference quickly that demonstrates your skills and growth.

Standing Out When Presenting Your Portfolio

  • Use reliable technology: make sure your computer is charged, you know where your portfolio is, and you know how to pull everything up in the program you are using.
  • Practice: you should not be practicing with employers! Make sure you practice your pitch ahead of time and be ready to showcase yourself both by your past experience and by being prepared.
  • Be straightforward: keep your presentation simple but engaging. You are welcome to use a laptop, print copies, and even have QR codes to share your portfolio.
  • Get feedback: if you want to work on your portfolio, the UGA Career Center has great resources on the website specifically for portfolios. You can also visit the Career Center in person on the second floor of Clark Howell Hall to ask questions, explore services, and start planning your next steps.

Whether you are presenting your accomplishments or getting ready to embark on the next phase of your career journey, a portfolio is a great way to showcase your growth and storytelling skills. It is a powerful tool that leaves a lasting impression on anyone you meet and is a reflection of who you are and where you’re going.

Start now and get ready to stand out!
