Explore Lab is a small group workshop offered by the UGA Career Center to help first-and second-year students navigate the process of choosing a major. This 1.5 hour workshop includes group discussion, a short career assessment, and an overview of campus resources to help students create an action plan and move forward in their major choice process. Students often leave Explore Lab with less anxiety about making the wrong decision and more excitement about exploring their options at UGA.

Explore Lab is a small group workshop offered by the UGA Career Center to help first-and second-year students navigate the process of choosing a major. Students often leave Explore Lab with less anxiety about making the wrong decision and more excitement about exploring their options at UGA.

In this group session, we'll discuss content about what admissions committees look for in personal statements and do activities to come up with content to craft a strong statement. You'll walk away with tangible resources and written ideas to help you begin your personal statement.

***This session is recommended for students applying to healthcare programs who are trying to start their personal statement and will provide time for questions and discussing content with peers. This session is not recommended for one-on-one time with a Career Consultant—if you are seeking this, please schedule an appointment.***

If you're applying to PA, PT, OT, AA, medical, dental, pharmacy, genetic counseling, or any other healthcare program, it's time to start thinking about writing your personal statement. In this group session, we'll discuss content about what admissions committees look for in personal statements and do activities to come up with content to craft a strong statement. You'll walk away with tangible resources and written ideas to help you begin your personal statement.

***This session is recommended for students applying to healthcare programs who are trying to start their personal statement and will provide time for questions and discussing content with peers. This session is not recommended for one-on-one time with a Career Consultant—if you are seeking this, please schedule an appointment.***

Bring a pen or your laptop and be ready to write. Labs are limited to 25 students; must register in advance on Handshake to attend. To avoid disrupting other students, you will not be able to enter the workshop 10 minutes or more after the start time. Please arrive on time.

The goal of our session will highlight the importance of establishing mentoring relationship with those who are different from ourselves.  We will also build diversity literacy by talking about the difference between diversity and inclusion, and identifying and avoiding the barriers to inclusive relationships.

Dr. Kecia Thomas is a Professor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology and African-American Studies at UGA.  She also serves as the Senior Associate Dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.  She is an expert in the Psychology of Workplace Diversity.  Dr. Thomas is an elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association as well as the Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology and the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnicity, Culture and Race. Dr. Thomas is a member of the National Change Team for the NSF funded, Aspire Alliance whose goal it is to build a more diverse and inclusive STEM community.
