As we explore these issues, we will discuss ways that you can assess employer diversity and inclusion during the job search. We will also discuss ways to help cultivate a more inclusive work environment and strategies for actively (and appropriately) confronting the bias you encounter in others. The goal is for every participant to walk away with a broader understanding of how implicit bias influences ourselves and the world.

Women of UGA Online Networking: Alumnae and Students Connect

Date: October 24, 2017
Time: 12:30 pm until 2:00 pm

Location: Virtual Venue (Online)

Join this Women of UGA virtual networking event to gain advice and words of wisdom from women professionals!

Students will get the opportunity to connect with alumnae professionals who live around the world to discuss topics that affect women in the workplace. Alumnae will share experiences, exchange career tips and students can build a global professional network - all online!

It's free, it's only an hour and it's fun!

How it Works:

Online networking enables you to speed-network no matter where you are in the world. You can sign in from your home, office, library, phone or tablet. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing you to make connections, exchange contact information, and end the hour with several new connections you didn't have before. After the chats, add your new contacts to your network by adding them to your LinkedIn networks or following up via email.

The booths are broken down into the following topical areas, although you should feel free to ask any question about managing your career as a woman.

  • Standing out in the job search
  • Effective communication in the workplace
  • Interviewing tips for women
  • Balancing personal and work life
  • Being a woman in leadership
  • Staying involved in the community

FOR STUDENTS: Here are some ideas on how to get the conversation started:

  • What did you study at UGA?
  • What do you do professionally?
  • Why did you decide to participate in this event?
  • How did you get into your industry area?
  • Can I ask for your advice on ____?
  • What's your favorite memory on campus?
  • If you could do one thing differently in your career, what would it be?

FOR ALUMNI/PROFESSIONALS: Here are some ideas on how to get the conversation started with students:

  • Do you know what type of career you are working towards?
  • Do you have an internship lined up for the summer?
  • Are you involved in any professional organizations?
  • Why did you decide to participate in this event

A transcript of your conversations will be saved for you to access after each event, so you can look back at your chat history, review your notes, gather contact information and follow up.

GENERATION STARTUP takes us to the front lines of entrepreneurship in America, capturing the struggles and triumphs of six recent college graduates who put everything on the line to build startups in Detroit. Shot over 17 months, it’s an honest, in-the-trenches look at what it takes to launch a startup. Directed by Academy Award winner Cynthia Wade and award-winning filmmaker Cheryl Miller Houser, the film celebrates risk-taking, urban revitalization, and diversity while delivering a vital call-to-action—with entrepreneurship at a record low, the country’s economic future is at stake.

The Pitch: the Career Center’s competition and networking event modeled after NBCs “The Voice.”

Date: October 11, 2017
Time: 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm

Location: Richard B. Russell Special Collections Library, Second Floor

Welcome to The Pitch, the Career Center's competition and networking event modeled after NBCs "The Voice." The Pitch is a fun, high-energy event in which students will deliver their elevator pitch to four employer judges for an automatic chance to choose a career coach, receive additional networking and career advice, and compete for a grand prize

Twelve finalists will be chosen, and each given up to a minute to deliver their elevator pitch* to the audience and employer judges. The judges will spin around to face the student when they like what they hear! Each finalist will choose one of the judges as their career coach. Each coach will provide two follow up career consulting sessions, or one larger session. Following the competition, we will announce the best pitch, and award the contestant with our grand prize (to be announced soon)!

We will host a networking reception after the competition, where finalists and students in the audience will have an additional opportunity to network with the judges, and other employers in the audience. Applications can be submitted through Big Interview, a new site that provides comprehensive interview advice and practicing opportunities. UGA students have free access, but you will need to register for an account using your UGA email address. Go to: uga.biginterview.com Click on the Assignments tab, and enter code: 75e585

You will be prompted with the question, "Tell me about yourself." Submissions should be between 45-60 seconds. You will be able to practice, review, and edit your video prior to submitting.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Sunday, October 1 at 11:59pm.

*Elevator pitches are the professional summaries of experience and qualifications that we often use with employers when given a short period of time – such as introducing ourselves at a Career fair, or responding to the popular “Tell me about yourself” question in an interview. You may refer to pg. 15 of the Career Guide, or watch video tutorials at uga.biginterview.com for tips, but you are also encouraged to be as creative as possible for this competition!

Many professionals find it difficult to secure a position that utilizes all of their knowledge and skills, while providing a salary that coincides with the value they bring to an organization. Learning how to make an impact, regardless of your age is what puts you ahead of the pack! You don’t have to be looked at as the lazy Millennial, the out of touch Baby Boomer, or the lone ranger Gen Xer.

The three biggest challenges people face during their job search will be explored. This is designed to help you take months (or even years) off of your job search! Join us for this interactive webinar. All generations are welcome to attend!

Guest Speaker: Porschia Parker, founder of Fly High Coaching and the Millennial Performance Institute, is a Certified Professional Coach through the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching and an Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner. Advice from the Big Dawgs: Alumni Bulldogs and Students Connect ONLINE!

Date: September 28, 2017
Time: 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm

Location: Virtual Venue (Online)

Join fellow University of Georgia students and alumni for the fall Advice from the Big Dawgs virtual networking event!

Students will get the opportunity to connect with alumni professionals in industry areas who live around the world! Alumni can share experiences, exchange career tips and students can build a global professional network - all online!

It's free, it's only an hour, and it's fun!

How it Works: Online networking enables you to speed-network no matter where you are in the world. You can sign in from your home, office, library, phone or tablet. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing you to make connections, exchange contact information, and end the hour with several new connections you didn't have before. After the chats, add your new contacts to your network by adding them to your LinkedIn networks or following up via email.

FOR STUDENTSHere are some ideas on how to get the conversation started:

  • What did you study at UGA?
  • What do you do professionally?
  • Why did you decide to participate in this event?
  • How did you get into your industry area?
  • Can I ask for your advice on ____?
  • What's your favorite memory on campus?
  • If you could do one thing differently in your career, what would it be?

FOR ALUMNI/PROFESSIONALSHere are some ideas on how to get the conversation started with students:

  • Do you know what type of career you are working towards?
  • Do you have an internship lined up for the summer?
  • Are you involved in any professional organizations?
  • Why did you decide to participate in this event

A transcript of your conversations will be saved for you to access after each event, so you can look back at your chat history, review your notes, gather contact information and follow up.
