Breaking Barriers: Being Black in the Entertainment & Media Industry

During this virtual panel discussion, UGA alumni professionals in the entertainment and media industry with share their personal victories and challenges of being Black within the field of entertainment and media, and offer a networking opportunity to current students. Panelists will share general career advice, how mentorship has played a role in their journeys, and how to break into their industry as a Person of Color. The last 25-minutes of the event will allow participants to network with a panelist of their choice. Please follow the prompts on the registration page to indicate your choice of panelist for the networking portion.

Panelists:

Nathan DuConge, UGA '16, Filmmaker, Acid Panda

Nathan’s dream of becoming a filmmaker started with Steven Spielberg when he read his biography in elementary school. Nathan became interested in storytelling and learning how to make dreams become reality through filmmaking. After graduating from UGA in 2016, Nathan pursued becoming a filmmaker in Los Angeles. There, he wrote, directed, and produced a supernatural web series titled Eden, a horror short sequel titled Dr. Friday, and founded his own production company Acid Panda. Deja White, UGA '17, Digital Marketing Specialist, WarnerMedia

Deja White is a Digital Marketing professional who develops digital content and user experiences that attract and get fans excited about engaging with televised programming. After earning an ABJ degree in Mass Media Arts from The University of Georgia, Deja hit the ground running and has had the opportunity to craft digital stories that connect with consumers and corporate employees on a deeper level. She’s used her background in TV/Film Production and Communications to influence content for brands such as the NBA, NCAA March Madness, Adult Swim, and Uber.

Jamari Jordan, UGA '16, Associate Producer, ESPN

Jamari is an associate producer for ESPN/SEC Network based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and graduated from UGA in May 2016 with a degree in Entertainment & Media Studies. He loves sports & journalism and has seen, now more than ever, that sports are a microcosm of society. He enjoys playing a role in telling those stories, and believes mentorship is important because you never know what can happen after you hold the door open for someone--sometimes access breeds success.

Raven Pratt, UGA '16, Assistant Media Planner, Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator, 22squared

Raven recently started her journey in the media space, working on media plans for clients such as Southeast Toyota and SunTrust (now Truist). Her previous experience in finance and fashion merchandising has equipped her with the knowledge of developing and implementing strategies with tactically sound insights that increase engagement with brands.

 

Moderator:

Derek Walker, UGA '22

Derek Walker is a third year Entertainment and Media Studies major, Film Studies, and Theatre minor at the University of Georgia. He’s an aspiring filmmaker looking to write and direct for film or television. He's produced several short films using a wide range of techniques and has received accolades in various film festivals. Most recently he held an internship with WarnerMedia.
